UK Uncut gets its Judicial Review21 June 2012It was reported in April that the pressure group UK Uncut Legal Action was applying for a judicial review into HMRC’s settlement with Goldman Sachs which allowed the latter to escape payment of £millions of interest on unpaid tax. Sitting at the High Court in London for the preliminary hearing, Mr Justice Simon ruled that UK Uncut had “an arguable case” that should go to a full hearing. Leave was given “to seek a declaration that the agreement allowing the banking giant to skip a multi-million-pound interest bill on unpaid taxes on bonuses was unlawful”. HMRC said they would strongly contest the application, but welcomed the opportunity to demonstrate that they acted legally. |
